Influence of Slope on Fire Spread Rate

چکیده
75 Abstract—Data demonstrate the effect of slope on heading and backing fires burning through woody fuels. The data indicate that the upper limit of heading fire rate of spread is defined by the rate of spread up a vertical fuel array, and the lower limit is defined by the rate of spread of a backing fire burning downslope. The minimum spread rate is found to occur at nominally –16 degrees slope.

A Qualitative Comparison of Fire Spread Models Incorporating Wind and Slope Effects
Wind velocity and slope are two critical variables that affect wildland fire rate of spread. The effects of these variables on rate of spread are often combined in rate-of-spread models using vector addition. The various methods used to combine wind and slope effects have seldom been validated or compared due to differences in the models or to lack of data. In this study, rate-of-spread predict...
متن کاملNumerical modelling of wildland fire spread on the windward and leeward sides of a ridge
Wildland fires are occasionally observed to spread rapidly across steep leeward slopes, in a direction that is approximately transverse to the background wind. Laboratory experiments and remote sensing of wildland fires suggest that this atypical lateral fire spread can occur regardless of whether the fire is ignited on the leeward slope or advances onto it from the windward slope. The lateral ...
متن کاملA heat transfer simulation model for wildfire spread
A new approach to fire spread simulation based on heat transfer events is described. The new simulation model is patch based with irregular patch shapes and sizes, which overcomes the influence of grid geometry on fire shape. It captures fire behaviour phenomena such as point fire acceleration and the dependence of fire rate of spread on line fire width. The new event based simulation model is ...
متن کاملSlope effects on the fluid dynamics of a fire spreading across a fuel bed: PIV measurements and OH* chemiluminescence imaging
Slope is among the most influencing factor affecting the spread of wildfires. A contribution to the understanding of the fluid dynamics of a fire spreading in these terrain conditions is provided in thepresent paper. Coupled optical diagnostics are used to study the slope effects on the flow induced by a fire at laboratory scale. Optical diagnostics consist of Particle Image Velocimetry, for in...
متن کاملCalculation of fire spread rates across random landscapes∗
An approach is presented for approximating the expected spread rate of fires that burn across 2-dimensional landscapes with random fuel patterns. The method calculates a harmonic mean spread rate across a small 2-dimensional grid that allows the fire to move forward and laterally. Within this sample grid, all possible spatial fuel arrangements are enumerated and the spread rate of an elliptical...
